What's planned for you?
Sandy- I ventured out and did a roast leg of lamb on the rotiserier on the barbie. Never done one before. Yummy!! It was excellent. The lamb here is so good and cheap.
Other then that we went to the beach to watch volleyball, played in the waves,sand..oh you probably don't want to hear anymore. Guess you'll just have to come visit.
Oh stop, I can't take anymore.
Sounds too good. The lamb is another thing I miss. And Tim Tams, Vegemite, fish & chips, Aussie pizza, scallops & crayfish.
Donna
Is it Boxing Day or Jumping Day?
Sorry Donna for reminding you of the yummy lamb. Yes, the fish/chips, crays are to die or down here. Tim Tams are my favorites. But I haven't learned to appreciate vegimite yet.
Brenna- When is Kiwi day?
Wendy - the trick to eating vegemite is to spread it very, very thinly. Don't use it like jam or peanut butter - just a mere scrape on a slice of bread and butter (real butter) is delicious. Vegemite is also good for adding extra flavour to soups, stews, etc.
Wendy,
Brenna is no expert on "Kiwi Day" but I did look a couple of things up. Feb. 6 is Waitangi Day. This is a national holiday commemorating the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. This Treaty gave the Maori the rights of British Subjects and gave the British rule over New Zealand. It has been a subject of debate (and earlier of war)ever since.
Waitangi ("birthplace of the nation")is about an hour's drive north of here. We are contemplating braving the crowds and attending the festivities then.
As for Vegemite, Wendy, Alice and Donna: My dear husband claims it lacks flavour and he much prefers his Marmite. He likes it spread thickly on toast with extra old cheddar cheese. But he does have many good qualities.
Alice, thant's exactly the way to eat vegemite. Use it sparingly, It's good with lettuce as a sandwich too. Kathleen, I don't mind Marmite but true blue Aussies only eat vegemite!
Oh Wendy, I also miss Cherry ripes and crumpets. I will gain 20 pounds when I get back there, just catching up on the food.
Donna
Kathleen- What kind of food and drinks are served for Kiwi day? Kiwi's?
Alice and Donna- I have really tried! I just can't do vegimite. I do however find it useful to threaten my children with a spoonful of vegimite if the get too sassy.
I give the Cherry Ripes a resounding Yes!
Wendy - you need to run fast. Do not, I repeat do not go for the vegemite and really run when they offer Marmite. It has to be the grossest things invented. My husband eats it, and it makes me gag!!!! It is that bad. When you get home, I will tell you about the Marmite treatment. No matter how thin you spread it, or try and cover it up with other things, eg: cheese, it is still really bad. The only thing I can think that would get the taste out of your mouth is a bottle of Tequila. It's aftertaste is worse than when it goes down. Are you getting the picture? Be adventursome of course, but don't go there. Not worth it, you will not be a better person for it. To like it, it has to be in your genes. Consider this my warning. However, if you do not heed my warning and actually try it and like it, let me know. My husband will then have someone to hang out with.
Mrs. Wilson-
I suspected that was the case. I found the vegemite after taste lasted way too long. Marmite sounds like something made from well-aged road kill. Can't go there.
Would you like me to bring you some vegimite back when I come to visit in March. It works wonders with misbehavin N. American youngsters.
