37C (Kingston Beach)

Today was hot! Not even the breeze aided the cooling process. Instead it felt quite a bit like I had turned my hair dryer on my face. A cruel joke from the roaring 40's none the less.

I have a tan. I haven't had a tan for years. I didn't try for a tan..it just happened. The tan happened regardless of the 7 bottles of sunscreen dilagently reapplied every hour. Hats have become an everyday item. We are practicing our sun safety however despite our efforts we can't successfully combate the hole in the ozone directly over us and the blazing Austalian sun. Even the dog headed for the water. She is terrified of waves but the heat overcame her and she braved the swells.

Our next plan of attack is to purchase a spray bottle instead of going to the beach. The hot sand blistered my tender tootsies and the sun hurts too much at the beach. Monday is going to be cooler. I think we might go to the ICE SKATING ARENA. Posted by Picasa

Hi Wendy

I have just visited your Website and I am gong to link your Blog,so I have easy access to your wonderful photos.

To day in Melbourne we sweltered under 44C temparatures follwing a 40C the previous day. That's 110 F on the other scale.

Having enjoyed happy holidays touring Tasmania I think you have made a good choice as a destination and I will be interested in your adventures. I was also interested to see you’re from British Columbia in Canada. I have a link to Gary fom Within Sight who resides in Nelson where the countryside looks pretty and snow clad at present.

I loved your movie choice of the Deer Hunter and The Piano.

Best Wishes

When we lived in the Twin Cities, there was a ice rink down the street from us. One of our summer time pleasures was stopping there after they hade shaved the rink and dumped a pile of "snow" in the back parking lot. We would slide down the pile, make little snowmen, throw snowballs at each other, all in 90degree+ (F) temps.

sylvana-sounds glorious about now. In Canada we had a big pile of shaved ice outside the Hockey arena. Somehow I don't think I appreciated it enough.

Lindsey- Thanks for the link! I will link yours likewise. I thought I was melting until I spoke with Sydneyite. She remembers 48C. Tassie is looking very mild comparatively. Do you ever get used to the extreem heat? I will certainly check out the fellow Cunuck from Nelson. We could use a litle snow today.

Come on over here for a break from the heat. 27 seems high here and the sand is just the right warmth to heat you up after a swim. However, Miss A is always cold and wears sweaters everywhere. I keep threatening to send her to Africa but perhaps Tassie will do. Are you up for it?

You are lucky to have an ice rink handy, our closest rink is in Auckland (1.5-2hour drive).
I too remember the pile of ice outside the rink. Miss B's daycare group played there after a skating session. Two days later I read a letter in the local paper pointing out that all the hockey players spit, bleed and sneeze on the ice and it was the worst possible place for the kids to play. Haven't heard of anyone actually getting sick from it. Probably too cold for the germs to multiply.

How is Ruby doing? You might have to shave her.

Hey, Wendy, it was officially only 31 degrees in Hobart yesterday - almost chilly ...lol

Hope today is cooler for you, and your sunburn isn't too sore.

Wahhhhhh......Okay I'm sorry but it was windy and wet again today. Do they really have a ice arena that is open all year?

Kathleen- We would have to force feed Missy A Mac&Cheese if she came to live with us. I doubt she'd be too happy about that. However we will take your mild 27C. As far as the ice skating areana goes...they don't even have a zamboni.I am a little embarresed for them. They use a tractor. No worry about infected bodily fluids in the pile of ice outside. There simply isn't one however I think you probably ruined Sylvanas childhood memories with your last comments lol. No Ruby isn't shaved yet. I am still hopefull there is a dog show judge out there that knows a real champion.

MamaAlice-It was lovely today. Cloud cover really helps. I don't know how you can still have a sense of humor in the temps. that you have.Amazing!

Sandy- Ohhhh come on, Where is your sympathy. It is tought having a tan...in late January.....hehehe.

The Aussie solution to hot sand:

Take a beach towel. Hold it length-ways in front of you. Stand on the very end of the towel, continuing to hold the other end in your hands. Shuffle down the beach on the towel. You'll look like and idiot, but IT WORKS. And before you know it, the sun will be gone and you'll be rugged up wondering when it will be back :)

Thanks for that tip Tanya. It should be fun watching the kids work that one out.

Hi, nice to see you. I'm a Japanese college student. It seems very hot and the sun should be burning. I think you'd be better to reapply sunscreen every 10 minutes. In Japan, it's winter now. Everyone wears a warm coat, some are with mufflers and knit caps. I'm gonna visit Tasmania from mid February to mid March. How's the weather in Tasmania at those seasons? I don't know what to wear, a T-shirt or a sweater. Need I take something warm to wear? If you like, please tell me about it. When staying in Tasmania, I don't fail to take a hat with me d:)
