Hobart City

This is The City. In Hobart the new meets the old. The fabulous sandstone buildings built by convict labor stand in a stately manner next to the contempary buildings of today. The narrow streets are one way then the other. Parking is a commodity and crossing the street can be hazardous. The sidewalks are lined with little cafes crowded with coffee goers. At noon you would be lucky to find a seat in the popular restaurants. A" lunch out culture" is very evident . In most ways it reminds me of Europe with it quaint small businesses however still offering everything a big city should. Posted by Picasa

Wendy,
These pictures are great. They bring back many fond memories and make me homesick.
It looks like Hobart has not changed much in 10 years, I recognise a lot of the buildings.

Amazing how outdoor dining has taken off in Australia. It was unknown in the southern states until maybe 10 or 15 years ago. Now people sit at outdoor cafes even in winter. Those powerful gas heaters on stands really are effective too!

I applaude you. You have done something that I have always wanted to do but will probably never have the courage to do it. We live in the US in the Midwest and I would love to pick up my kids and move to Australia.
