We're really looking forward to seeing W and M, and of course, J and C. If L or A or T or whoever would like, we will send postcards.

Hi Wendy. My mum, Alice (A Growing Delight), told me about your quest for great reef places. I've dived many places there. If you're going with small children, one of the big operators running from Cairns or Port Douglas would be good for a day trip. If you want a brilliant reef (protected from fishing, so there's lots of fish and turtles and more) with few people, great snorkelling and diving, try Wheeler Reef, off Townsville (though only a small boat - carries about 12 people - goes out there for the day). I would say that is one of the best day trips to the reef of all. Absolutely incredible. If you're scuba diving - the Yongala wreck is one of the world's top dive sites (not suitable for beginners). Avoid at all costs: John Brewer Reef, Kelso Reef (both off Townsville) and probably a few off Cairns - they're pretty awful - trashed from lots of visitors and coral bleaching and crown-of-thorns-starfish. Southern reefs are good too. Bundaberg - Lady Elliott Island - is pretty (but cold). Whitsunday Island Reefs are pretty good - good to see with kids as well. If you go there, go to Whitehaven Beach - lots of people, but a stunning, stunning beach. Okay, enough ramble. Let me know if you need more info. Good luck!!

Me again.

To visit/stay/eat: Port Douglas - expensive - caters to people with deeper pockets than mine. Cairns - more reasonable - many tourists. Townsville - the aquarium, ReefHQ, is brilliant (and that's not just because a bunch of my friends are aquarists there) and well worth a visit. Mission Beach (between Cairns and Townsville) is a great place. You can spot cassowaries (if you're lucky), swim at the beach, stay in a treetop cabin and visit Dunk Island nearby. Airlie Beach - party town for English backpackers, but has a great lagoon (artificial) that is 1km long (or something like that) and free to swim in. And is croc free. This is the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands (Hamilton, South Molle, Daydream, Hayman etc). Don't know too much about places to stay further south. Rainforests in the hinterland behind Cairns are beautiful - Kuranda, Yungaburra and Paluma are all great. And if you're driving, you MUST stop at Frosty Mango on the Bruce Highway about an hour north of Townsville. They make their own icecreams: lychee, black sapote, mango (of course) and more.

Okay, now I'm really out of here...

Ohh! I want to go over there. It sounds like so much fun. Too bad it is so far away and expensive to fly to.

Tanya,

CROC FREE! I hadn't even thought about that. Do they eat you in one bit or a limb at a time??? Well my choices have narrowed. We will be looking at the CROC FREE places. Silly me..I was just worried about sharks with gaping jaws and razor sharp teeth.
Thanks for the information. I will follow up on it. But please...tell me more about the crocs...

Kathleen,
I guess if we are going to die someday anyways we might as well have seen the GBF first...or last.

Good. I keep telling Andrew we should stop saving for our retirement and spend the money now on booze and chocolate and travel. If we plan on dying in early retirement we can have way more fun now.

That does make sense doesn't it?
