Things I never thought I'd see.

In the past year we have managed to see four waters most people don't even know exits. The Tasman Sea we viewed from the East coast of the island, the west coast of Tasmania we could see the Indian Ocean. The south looks out over the Southern ocean and the North of Tasmania looks out over the Bass Straits. All of them so breathtakingly beautiful. These are some of the things I never dreamed I would see in my lifetime.
I remember as a school aged child growing up in America hearing about the elusive Duck Billed Platypus and the Tasmanian Devil. I never even dreamed that I would see them someday. These are a few pictures I shot while out on a walk near Latrobe, Tasmania.
located just south of Devonport. What a treat to see these amazing animals. I am a lucky girl. Posted by Picasa

Yes, you are lucky to have seen one outside a zoo. My husband (born in Australia 60 years ago) and I (lived here since 1974) saw one in the wild for the first and only time last year, in the Barwon River in Geelong. We were too surprised to remember to take a photo.

When last in Tassie we journeyed up the east coast and down through the middle. It s was quant and beautiful.

You have certainly witnessed some wonderful scenery!!

Where I live in Melbourne, near the Yarra River we thought the platypus must have become extinct. But fortunately they have returned and numbers are growing with the improved quality of the water. At the Healesville Sanctuary not to far from where I live they have successfully bred platypuses in captivity.

The biggest threat to them is a loss of habitat, from cleared land and pollution.

You might be interested to know their natural enemies are snakes, water rats, goannas, and those wretched introduced species the foxes.

Australia has the worst record of mammalian extinctions in the world, due mainly to the introduced fox.

Only recently the fox become established in Tasmania, potentially able to cause great damage to your wonderful Tasmanian wild life. The Tasmanian Government has established the Fox Free Tasmania Taskforce to implement a long-term eradication program to eradicate any foxes that may be in Tasmania now, and to ensure foxes are never introduced here again. If You see any , report them !!
best wishes

Lindsey- There are FOX FREE signs everywhere. I haven't seen any but am aware of the problem. Thanks for the further info on the platypus. Surreal!

Yes you are a very lucky girl! I grew up in Australia and never saw a platypus outside a zoo! And how lucky that you had your trusty camera ready! The water in that bottom picture is spectacular. I'm wondering what caused that effect. Do you know? Perhaps just the sunshine? Tasmania looks like a truly beautiful place.
