One Lonely Can

One can per week! Can you even imagine???? That is all they will pick up. Anything eles must be recycleable, tied up, cleaned out, crushed, and seperated. If not..the will just drive on by leaving a sweet, little note telling you what you needed to do to have them take your garbage. Last week they left me a note and my full garbage can. The note said my can was facing the wrong direction. Talk about social responsibility!
In Canada we always had three cans per week. I am sure my parents with only two in their hous hold put out at least three cans per week. How does a family of four manage to have only one can of garbage per week. Off to the tip (aussie for dump)we go again. Posted by Picasa

You must have been allowed three cans because you paid for your garbage. We are only allowed two. We 95% of the time only have one can a week. Composting and recycling take care of most of our garbage. Did you compost at your last house?

We paid for our garbage. We didn't recycle or compost. They make it too hard in N. America by making you pay to have someone pick up the recyclables. It is a good system here.We all recycle. We manage most of the time. Christmas will be a killer.

Actually, Wendy, I find it hard to imagine how a family of four can fill one bin per week. I'm assuming that you have a separate recycling bin for bottles (plastic & glass), tins, papers, cardboard, etc. Food packaging and food itself seems to be about all that's left for the bin. I realise that many people don't want or are unable to have a compost heap, so I guess that becomes the garbage. I'm not being critical, just curious.

Wendy, we don't have anybody pick up our recycling. Rhys takes it to the Sportsplex about twice a month. I'm not being critical either I'm just always surprised that all people don't recycle and/or compost. We've just have done it for so long now. I refuse to buy anything that is made of styrofoam because it can't be recycled. But you know me...I always go a little over the top. I've even been known to carry a bag in my pocket when out for walks and will pick up garbage along the way.

I would tend to pickup garbage along a walk but the garbage recycling it just isn't my thing if it requires much effort. I don't buy the whole global warming thing either. I'll blame it on my American upbringing.

Okay, as my husband says, I shouldn't put my two cents in too, but I have to. We recycle here too. Actually, it's one of the kids chores. It takes a little bit to get used too, but once you get the hang of it, it is really simple and effortless. As a family of 5, most weeks, we don't even have 1 full garbage can. Between recycling and composting, it takes most of the stuff. I bet the kids would love to do it. Especially, since it is probably promoted in the schools and has just become habit for them. I know our school has recycling bins in the class and hallways. Keep us posted, it seems to be a popular subject.

PS... I know when we were in CA, we were shocked that they didn't recycle there, so you do have a reason.

Funny the things that generate conversation. I never would have guessed it. I know in Canada it is really catching on. I would still say it is a bit of a split. In the US..(from my experience which is now very limited only really seeing my family) it is still the exception in my home town. In Australia it is the norm. I just wish some of those American's would leave some comments.
